Sciatic Nerve Pain In Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient science but it still has many remedies that will help many modern day health conditions. Sciatic nerve pain is one of these conditions. It is known as ‘gridhrasi’ in Ayurveda and is classified as a ‘Vata roga’ which occurs because of aggravated air element in the body. Those who suffer from sciatic nerve pain often feel a very sharp and unbearable pain that starts from their hips and move to their thighs. Sometimes, it might become severe and travel all the way up to your calves and even the toes. This can happen in one or both of your legs. A tingling sensation, numbness, discomfort and even weakness is felt in the entire lower body, including the genitals. As per Ayurveda, this can occur because of the inflammation, irritation and compression of the sciatic nerve.

However, it can also be caused because of bad posture, medical condition or even because of physical shocks. Ayurveda follows a four-fold method for the treatment of sciatic nerve pain. This method is mentioned below:

Dietary changes– people who are suffering from sciatic nerve pain must try to avoid curd or any other sour food. It aggravates their condition. You should also be prohibiting fried foods, beans and pulses from your food completely. The patient should take a very small quantity of saffron mixed with milk in order to help relieve the condition.

Lifestyle changes– it is advisable to opt for gentle exercises for the leg. Additionally, you must avoid any kind of exposure to cold and damp environments. If you can, then swim in warm water for some time. It will help in providing good exercise to your legs. Always sleep on a harder bed and wear a lumbo-sacral belts for providing adequate support to your back. You must also try to do yoga. Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana and Halasana will be good for you.

Medications for internal treatments– you will be able to get rid of sciatic nerve pain by using Grithams, Gutika, Churnams and Kashayas which can be taken in the form of powders or pills. You can get a consultation at the Kerala Ayurveda Center and get some take-home medications as well.

Therapies for external treatments– massages, panchkarma and some rejuvenation therapies can be performed for 7 to 28 days in sessions of 30 to 45 minutes. Nadi Swedam, Elakizhi, Pizhichil, matra vasthim and kati vasthi are some of the other common treatment for sciatic nerve pain.
